“I was a construction supervisor. I got laid off in 2009. Then I had a mild stroke. I came back, but I was 65%.  And I’m almost 60. There’re not a lot of places hiring 60-year-old guys…I had it good. I had a house on the Cape, a house in Florida. Now I have no house. I like it better. Well, not really. Just trying to make light of a bad situation.  My sons hate me. They think I’m an abject failure.”

I can identify with this guy a lot…though I thank God didn’t lose our house…but got pretty deep in debt with bills and things. I was unemployed for nearly 5 years, and during that time trying to get Social Security disability. I finally received it this May on appeal. If not for the help of friends, neighbors and relatives….my wife and I would be on the street. I just turned 57 in March, so I truly identify. It’s a shame that ageism exists, but it does.

Sad but all to true…at least in Australia we have a good welfare system and  health care….tell Congress! View Larger
